BLS – Basic Life Support Training
Develop the essential knowledge and practical skills required to recognise and respond effectively to life-threatening emergencies. Our Basic Life Support (BLS) Training introduces learners to early recognition of cardiac arrest, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), choking management and other fundamental life-saving interventions.
Through structured instruction, demonstrations and hands-on practice, participants develop the confidence and practical skills needed to provide immediate basic life support while awaiting further medical assistance.
BLS Training – Course Overview
Basic Life Support (BLS) Training provides learners with the essential knowledge and practical skills required to respond promptly and effectively to cardiac arrest and other life-threatening emergencies.
The programme introduces the fundamental principles of the chain of survival, early recognition of cardiac arrest, activation of the emergency response system, high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the safe use of an automated external defibrillator (AED).
Learners are introduced to appropriate BLS responses for adults, children and infants, including recognition and management of choking and other situations in which immediate life-saving intervention may be required.
Through instructor demonstrations, guided practice and realistic emergency scenarios, participants develop the ability to assess an unresponsive casualty, initiate appropriate BLS interventions and work effectively as part of a resuscitation team.
The training emphasises rapid recognition, personal and scene safety, effective chest compressions, appropriate ventilation, early defibrillation and minimising interruptions during CPR.

1. Introduction to Basic Life Support (BLS)
Purpose and principles of BLS, responder responsibilities, emergency recognition, scene safety and the importance of early intervention.
2. Chain of Survival & Emergency Response
Key elements of the Chain of Survival, recognising cardiac arrest, activating emergency medical services and obtaining an AED.
3. Initial Assessment of an Unresponsive Person
Assessing scene safety, checking responsiveness and breathing, calling for assistance and determining when CPR is required.
4. High-Quality Adult CPR
Correct positioning, chest-compression technique, compression rate and depth, full chest recoil, minimising interruptions and appropriate ventilation.
5. Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
AED preparation, correct pad placement, following device prompts, shock safety and integrating AED use with high-quality CPR.
6. Child Basic Life Support
Recognition of paediatric emergencies, appropriate child CPR techniques, compression and ventilation principles and AED considerations.
7. Infant Basic Life Support
Assessment of an infant, appropriate infant chest-compression techniques, rescue breathing and age-appropriate BLS response.
8. Airway Management & Rescue Breathing
Basic airway-opening techniques, effective rescue breaths, barrier devices and recognition of inadequate ventilation.
9. Choking – Adult & Child
Recognition of mild and severe airway obstruction, appropriate first-aid response and management of a casualty who becomes unresponsive.
10. Choking – Infant
Recognition of severe airway obstruction in infants and appropriate age-specific emergency response techniques.
11. Single-Rescuer & Team BLS
Roles and responsibilities during resuscitation, effective communication, coordinated CPR, switching compressors and minimising interruptions.
12. Safety, Infection Prevention & Special Considerations
Personal safety, appropriate protective measures, use of barrier devices and adapting BLS response to different emergency situations.
13. Practical BLS Scenarios & Skills Assessment
Hands-on CPR and AED practice, choking-management scenarios, simulated cardiac-arrest responses and assessment of practical BLS skills.

Practical BLS Training & Activities
The programme combines essential BLS knowledge with hands-on practical training designed to help learners develop confidence and competence in responding to life-threatening emergencies. Participants may undertake activities such as:
✓ Performing an initial assessment of an unresponsive casualty
✓ Demonstrating correct activation of the emergency response system
✓ Practising high-quality adult CPR using training manikins
✓ Performing appropriate child CPR techniques
✓ Practising infant CPR using infant training manikins
✓ Demonstrating correct chest-compression rate, depth and recoil
✓ Practising effective rescue breathing and ventilation techniques
✓ Using barrier devices appropriately during rescue breathing
✓ Demonstrating safe and effective use of an AED trainer
✓ Practising correct AED pad placement for adults and children
✓ Responding to simulated adult and child choking emergencies
✓ Demonstrating appropriate management of infant choking
✓ Practising single-rescuer BLS scenarios
✓ Participating in team-based CPR and resuscitation scenarios
✓ Practising effective communication and role allocation during resuscitation
✓ Completing simulated cardiac-arrest scenarios from recognition through CPR and AED use
Assessment & Training Approach
The BLS – Basic Life Support Training programme uses a practical and learner-centred approach to develop the knowledge, confidence and hands-on skills required to respond effectively to life-threatening emergencies.
Learning Approach:
Training combines instructor-led teaching, demonstrations, guided hands-on practice, scenario-based learning, group participation and supervised BLS exercises.
Practical Application:
Learners apply BLS principles through practical activities involving casualty assessment, high-quality CPR, rescue breathing, AED use, choking management and individual and team-based resuscitation scenarios.
Assessment:
Learner progress may be evaluated through knowledge checks, instructor observation, practical demonstrations, simulated emergency scenarios and competency-based assessment of essential BLS skills.
Learning Resources:
Participants may work with adult, child and infant CPR manikins, AED trainers, barrier devices, resuscitation masks and other appropriate BLS training equipment and learning resources.
Training Delivery:
The programme combines structured theoretical instruction with supervised practical skills training. Delivery arrangements are subject to the programme schedule and available training options.
